P0455: Evaporative emission system leak detected, large leak

● Can wait
Usually no immediate risk. Book it in, and watch for new symptoms.

The leak test found a large leak in the fuel vapour system. The driver may smell fuel or see only the engine light.

Guided check

  1. Is the fuel cap loose, cracked or missing its seal?
If yes: Fit or replace the cap, clear the code and drive for a few days to see if it returns.
  2. Does a smoke test show a leak at a hose or the filler neck?
If yes: Replace the leaking hose or neck and clear the code.
  3. Does the purge or vent valve fail its test?
If yes: Replace the faulty valve and run the evaporative test again.

These checks are general and are still being reviewed by working mechanics.

Causes vary by car. Test before you order a part.

Likely causes, most common first

  • Fuel cap loose, missing or worn
  • Disconnected or split EVAP hose
  • Purge or vent valve stuck open
  • Leak at the tank or filler neck
