P0217: Engine coolant overtemperature condition

● Stop driving
Driving on can cause serious damage or leave the car stranded.

The computer has recorded an engine temperature above its limit. The driver may see the gauge high or a warning light and the engine may reduce power.

Guided check

  1. Is the coolant low?
If yes: Let the engine cool before opening the cap. Top up and pressure test for leaks.
  2. Does the radiator fan stay off when the engine is hot?
If yes: Check the fan fuse, relay, motor and wiring.
  3. Is the top hose hot while the lower hose stays cold?
If yes: Suspect the thermostat, water pump or a blocked radiator. Check for head gasket signs if overheating continues.

These checks are general and are still being reviewed by working mechanics.

Causes vary by car. Test before you order a part.

Likely causes, most common first

  • Low coolant level or leak
  • Cooling fan not working
  • Thermostat stuck closed or failing water pump
  • Blocked radiator

Parts usually involved

Test before you replace

Check the coolant level and fan operation with the engine cool first, then pressure test the system and check for head gasket signs.
